This update introduces support for opening individual Markdown files, a kanban view for Bases, and highlight colors.

Important: opening Markdown files requires the latest installer. Download Obsidian from our website and reinstall the app.

Open individual Markdown files

You can now open individual Markdown files from outside your vault in Obsidian, and preview them on macOS using Quick Look. Files open in your current window.

  • Added the “Open file from outside the vault…” command. Pick a Markdown file on your computer and view it in the app.
  • Obsidian now appears in your operating system’s Open with menu, and you can set it as the default app for Markdown files.
  • On macOS you can use Quick Look previews for Markdown files even when Obsidian is closed.
  • Added document icons on macOS and Windows for .md, .base and .canvas.
  • Image embeds and links to other local files resolve relative to the Markdown file’s folder.
  • Use Outline to navigate headings and Outgoing links to browse linked files.

Kanban view and group options for Bases

Bases now has a kanban view. Organize your notes into columns and drag cards between groups. You can also reorder and hide groups in any Bases view using the new Group menu.

  • Use the Group menu to choose a grouping property and reorder, hide, or add groups.
  • Groups are now collapsible in the table, cards, and list layouts.

Highlight colors

Bring color to your notes with six highlight colors.

  • Add a color emoji (🔴, 🟠, 🟡, 🟢, 🔵, 🟣) at the start of a highlight, or choose a color from the formatting menu.
  • Typing == in the editor now suggests highlight colors.
  • Live Preview: When the cursor overlaps a highlight, an inline swatch now appears. Click it to quickly change the highlight color.

Improvements

  • Improved fuzzy search in the quick switcher and suggestions. Matches where your letters start words now rank higher.
  • Link suggestions and the quick switcher now use fuzzy matching in vaults of any size.
  • Improved search in the File Explorer, Bookmarks, Outline, Tags, and Sync views. Search now matches the full path of each item, and everything inside a matching item stays visible. Groups with nothing to show are hidden.
  • Excluding a search term (e.g. -Archive) in the File Explorer, Bookmarks, Outline, and Sync views now hides a matching folder and everything inside it.
  • Improved drag and drop in the File Explorer. The view now smoothly scrolls when dragging near the edge.
  • The entire workspace, including the sidebars, now flips when Obsidian is set to a right-to-left (RTL) language. Commands stay the same, so “Toggle left sidebar” now refers to the visual left sidebar, even when the interface is flipped.
  • Redesigned the empty state and added “New base” and “New canvas” when their plugins are enabled.
  • Added “Increase font size” and “Decrease font size” commands.
  • Base font size is now saved per device and no longer syncs through Obsidian Sync.
  • Added an update notice in Settings → General when a newer installer is available.
  • All in-app links now take you to the localized version of the Obsidian website.
  • When opening an untrusted vault, themes and snippets are temporarily disabled while the “Do you trust the author of this vault” dialog is on screen.
  • Format converter: Removed old formats from the converter plugin.

Performance

  • Fixed periodic input lag in large vaults caused by properties getting recomputed in the background.
  • Fixed the app freezing when searching headings across all notes ([[##) in large vaults.
  • Fuzzy search in the quick switcher and suggestions is now faster in large vaults.
  • Closing popout windows (such as Settings) is now much faster.

Bases

  • Added right-to-left (RTL) support to table views, including keyboard navigation, selections, and horizontal scrolling.
  • Improved how dates and times are rendered in group headers and in read-only layouts (e.g. Cards, Kanban).
  • A base made with “Create new base” now names its first view “View” instead of “Table”.

Editor

  • Pasting a list item onto a line that already contains a list marker (e.g. - [ ] ) no longer duplicates the marker.
  • In Source mode, pressing ↑ on the first line of a note now moves the cursor to the inline title, like in Live Preview.
  • Improved the inline formatting commands. For example, “Toggle bold” on this line:
some **bold |text** on the line|

    now results in:
some **bold text on the line**

No longer broken

  • Fixed copy and paste not working correctly in popout windows, including copying and pasting notes in Canvas.
  • Fixed property suggestions sometimes showing results for an earlier query, which made Enter pick an old link instead of what you typed.
  • Fixed pressing Enter on an invalid title in an embedded note (e.g. a new note from Bases) reverting the title and moving focus out of it. The title now stays focused so you can fix the name.
  • Fixed tooltips briefly disappearing when moving between adjacent items.
  • Fixed page preview showing behind Bases toolbar menus.
  • Fixed a potential iframe injection in the Slides plugin.
  • Fixed incorrect language code used for Khmer.
  • Web viewer: Fixed Google sign-in failing.
  • Note composer: Fixed “Extract this heading” not preserving the newline when there is only one newline between the section and the next heading.
  • Canvas: Fixed a card narrowed to a heading or block still showing that section after using Swap file… to pick the same file.
  • Vim: Fixed deleting and pasting a numbered list item inserting blank lines and empty numbered items.

Bases

  • Fixed the “+” button not generating correct frontmatter for unresolved links, e.g. file.hasLink("[[unresolved]]").
  • Fixed a long property name in a filter rule pushing the operator and value out of view.
  • Fixed “Hide all” causing the properties menu to render incorrectly.
  • Fixed “Copy path” showing up below “Delete” when you right-click a file in a table or cards view.

Editor

  • Fixed Option-Shift-↑ and Option-Shift-↓ not working consistently on macOS in long paragraphs, where the scroll position would sometimes reset and the text selection would be incorrect.
  • Fixed incorrect cursor placement when moving the cursor to the end of the line with multiple formatting markers (e.g. **__text__**).
  • Fixed ↑ not moving from the editor to the inline title when there are no properties.
  • Fixed Home and End keys in right-to-left languages.
  • Fixed a parser issue where ![]( caused all following text in the document to be treated as part of the image.
  • Fixed Markdown formatting characters not parsing correctly around emails (e.g. *Some email: [email protected]*).
  • Fixed clicking on collapsed reference links (e.g. [link][]) going to the wrong destination.

Third-party libraries

  • Math rendering now uses MathJax 4.1.3, replacing MathJax 3.

Developers

  • The installer has been updated to use Electron v43.7.5. To upgrade, visit the Obsidian download page and reinstall Obsidian.
  • Editor: Each line of a math block ($$) now has the .HyperMD-math class.
  • Settings: Added optional SettingDefinitionItem#id for setting a unique ID on individual settings. Think of it like <div key={key} /> in React. Use it to differentiate between sibling settings that share a name, or to keep a stable reference when a setting or setting page is renamed.
  • Added CSS variables for tooltips, notices, hotkeys, and tabs, using the prefixes --tooltip-, --notice-, --hotkey, --tab-inner- and --tab-container-.
